Who AI Search Cites in 2026
You can rank at the top of Google and still never appear in the answer. Here is who Google’s AI Overviews actually cited, on ordinary marketing questions, on one afternoon.

45%
used GenAI to research vendors
Gartner, B2B buyers
51%
start in a chatbot, not Google
G2, software buyers
38%
Overview citations that also rank top 10

THE THESIS
Winning the ranking is not the same as being in the answer. AI Overviews pull from a short list of platforms. A video can sit at #1 in the blue links and still not be the source the Overview names.
THE PROBLEM
The buyer left the results page
Search still matters. It is no longer the only place the shortlist gets built.
If your job is to get found, you have been trained on a simple win: rank. Title tags, links, a page that matches the query. That work is not wasted. It is no longer sufficient.
A growing share of vendor research now happens in a generated answer: an AI Overview, a chatbot, a synthesis that names a few sources and moves on. The buyer may never click through. SparkToro’s read of US Google clickstream (January to April 2026) found 68.01% of searches ended without a click. When an Overview was present, click-through fell by nearly 60%. That is how searchers behave, not a B2B buyer survey. It is still the room your page has to enter.
On the buyer side, the picture is the same shift from a different angle. Gartner surveyed 645 B2B buyers (August to September 2025, released 20 May 2026): 45% had used generative AI in a recent purchase, mainly to gather vendor and product information. They still wanted a human in the loop: 69% preferred to validate those AI insights with a sales rep. Trust is not automatic. About half thought GenAI was more likely to mislead; about half said the same of a rep.
G2 asked software buyers a cleaner starting-point question. In March 2026, 51% of 1,076 B2B software buyers began research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google, up from 29% a year earlier. That is the one comparison in this piece that is actually a time series: same firm, same question, twelve months apart. In that 2026 sample, 69% chose a different vendor than they had planned after chatbot guidance. 33% bought from a vendor they had never heard of.
HubSpot’s number is narrower and should stay that way: among CRM buyers, 42% used AI search during evaluation, and those buyers were 36% more likely to purchase. That is CRM, not “all B2B.”
None of these percentages are the same measurement. Do not average 45, 51, and 38. A Forrester blog (October 2025) says 95% of B2B buyers plan to use genAI in a future purchase (no sample size on the page we opened), so it is not a headline on this article. 6sense reports 94% of buyers used LLMs during the journey as a synthesis tool (comparing vendors, summarizing notes), not as the place they first discovered someone. Different jobs. Different numbers.
| What was measured | Headline | Who was asked |
|---|---|---|
| Used GenAI in a recent B2B purchase, mainly to gather vendor/product information | 45% | Gartner, 645 B2B buyers, Aug to Sep 2025 |
| Used AI search during CRM evaluation | 42% | HubSpot, 3,000+ CRM decision-makers, Jan 2026 |
| Start software research with an AI chatbot more often than Google | 51% (was 29% in Apr 2025) | G2, 1,076 B2B software buyers, Mar 2026 |
| Use LLMs during the buying process (synthesis, not discovery) | 94% | 6sense 2025 Buyer Experience Report, via 6sense’s blog |
| Plan to use genAI in at least one area of a future B2B purchase | 95% | Forrester analyst blog, 2 Oct 2025 (no n on the opened page) |
WHAT WE OPENED
The same names keep showing up
On 1 September 2026 we opened ordinary marketing questions and expanded every AI Overview.
On 1 September 2026 we opened ordinary marketing questions (“future of marketing 2026,” “who will do marketing work in the future,” “AI agents vs marketing automation”) and read who got named.
Every query produced an Overview. The names that kept coming back were not a long tail of brand homepages. They were platforms and a rotating set of pages: YouTube, Reddit, Gartner, Coursera, a few universities.
On “future of marketing 2026,” the Overview cited Gartner, Google Business Profile, Reddit (r/AskMarketing), YouTube (Alex Cattoni, Neil Patel), Coursera, and the University of Rhode Island. YouTube and Reddit were in the answer. That is the citation cluster: video and forums, not whoever else sat in the blue links.
That matches a much larger index. Ahrefs Brand Radar (July 2026, more than three million US queries) looks at mention share among the top 50 cited sources in Google AI Overviews, not all citations on the web. YouTube 21.1%. Reddit 18.5%. Then Facebook, Google, Instagram, Quora, Wikipedia. Brand sites rarely crack that top ten.
The Overviews themselves described a future of hybrid teams and humans still on judgment. That is their synthesis of the sources above. It is not a forecast we modeled.
| Query | Named in the Overview | Top organic (as read) |
|---|---|---|
| future of marketing 2026 | Gartner; Google Business Profile; Reddit; YouTube; Coursera; URI | gartner.com, impactmybiz.com, bcg.com, hubspot.com, business.google.com |
| AI agents vs marketing automation | Digital Marketing Institute; Cymetrix; Make; Reddit; YouTube | digitalmarketinginstitute.com, cymetrixsoft.com, reddit.com, aws.amazon.com, loudscale.com |
| who will do marketing work in the future | nu.edu; Reddit r/Career; Harvard professional-ed; IE University; Palm Beach Code School | youtube.com (Alif Huq), bostoninstituteofanalytics.org, reddit.com, palmbeachcodeschool.com, storyblok.com |
THE TELL
YouTube ranked first. The Overview named universities instead.
This is the split most SEO reports still miss, and it does not require a vendor bake-off.
One ordinary question makes the pattern impossible to shrug off. We searched “who will do marketing work in the future.” YouTube was the #1 organic result (an Alif Huq video). The Overview cited National University, Reddit’s r/Career, a Harvard professional-education card, IE University, and Palm Beach Code School. The video that won the blue links was not the lead source in the generated answer.
Same afternoon, “future of marketing 2026” showed a milder version of the same split. Gartner appears in both the Overview and as organic #1. BCG and HubSpot sit in the organic results and are not the Overview’s cited set. YouTube and Reddit are in the answer.
If you only look at rank, the top blue link won. If you look at the answer a buyer reads without clicking, a different set of names was in the room.
Ahrefs’ March 2026 parse found about 38% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also sit in the organic top 10. That is the cover number on the third card. It is not “your brand’s score.” It is not comparable one-to-one with Ahrefs’ July 2025 study (76%). The parse and the method both changed. Figure 3 pairs that dated overlap with “who will do marketing work in the future”: YouTube #1 in the links, .edu and Reddit in the Overview.
Researchers call the discipline GEO: visibility inside the generated answer, not position in a list of links (Aggarwal et al., 2023 to 2024). You do not need the academic name to use the idea. If buyers start in a chatbot, and Overviews cite a handful of platforms, then “we rank” is an incomplete report.
Check the category query your buyer would type. See whether you are named in the Overview. If you are only in the blue links, you have a citation problem, not just a ranking problem. That is the job. This page does not sell a tool for it.
Rank is not the answer.
On “who will do marketing work in the future,” YouTube was organic #1; the Overview named .edu and Reddit. Start from the generated result, then look at the links.
Buyers already research this way.
G2’s software buyers flipped from 29% to 51% starting in a chatbot. Gartner’s B2B buyers are already using GenAI for vendor information, and still want a human to check it.
Citations cluster.
YouTube and Reddit dominate both a three-million-query index and the “future of marketing 2026” Overview. A matching homepage is not a ticket in.
