How B2B Service Firms Show Up in AI Search Answers
In a September 2026 capture of 80 AI search answers to buyer questions about managed IT and cybersecurity, 120 provider firms appeared. Firms showed up as a cited source in 130 firm and answer pairs and were named in the answer text in 48, but were recommended in none. Gemini surfaced no provider firms at all.
120 firms
IT and cybersecurity providers that appeared in at least one of 80 AI search answers
130 vs 48
firm and answer pairs where the firm was a cited source, compared with pairs where it was named in the answer text
0
times any answer recommended a specific firm
The thesis
In AI search, a service firm is far more likely to show up as a source the answer leans on than as a name the buyer is told to call. Being cited, being named and being recommended are three different things.
The scene
A buyer reads the answer, not the links
Where your firm can appear without being chosen.
A clinic manager asks an AI search product what to check before hiring a managed IT provider. The answer is a tidy checklist. Under it sit a few source links, and one of them goes to an IT firm's own website.
That firm's page is listed as one of the answer's sources. Its name may never appear in the text, and the answer does not tell the manager to call it. Did the firm show up in AI search? Yes, but not in the way most people picture.
So we went through every answer and traced each provider firm that appeared, and how.
What we looked at
80 answers, every firm traced
Built on our study of how AI search handles B2B buyer questions.
We started from 80 answers: 20 buyer questions about managed IT and cybersecurity, asked in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews in September 2026. The questions ran from understanding a problem, to choosing a type of service, to choosing a provider.
For every answer we listed each IT or security provider that appeared and recorded how: as a cited source link, as a name in the text, or as a recommendation. Software platforms such as Microsoft and Google, publishers, and public agencies such as NIST and CISA were not counted as provider firms. Where a linked site could not be tied to a firm with confidence, we left it out rather than guess.
Finding 1
Most firms appear as sources, not names
Links outnumber mentions by a wide margin.
120 provider firms appeared across the 80 answers, in 149 firm and answer pairs. A firm appeared as a cited source in 130 of those pairs (103 different firms) and was named in the answer text in 48 (46 different firms). Some pairs were both.
Recommendations stayed at 0. No answer told the buyer to choose or contact a specific firm, in any product or at any stage.
Appearances were spread thin. The firm seen most often appeared in 7 of the 80 answers.
Finding 2
The product decides how firms show up
Four products, four different patterns.
Answers per product with at least one firm named in the text, by buyer stage
| Product | Understanding the problem (7) | Choosing a type of service (7) | Choosing a provider (6) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 2 | 3 | 3 |
| Perplexity | 5 | 1 | 0 |
| Gemini | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Google AI Overviews | 0 | 1 | 0 |
ChatGPT named firms in the text more readily but showed few links: none in its 7 problem answers. Perplexity showed source links on every answer and named 30 different firms in its problem answers. Google AI Overviews rarely named a firm in the text, yet its links surfaced 30 firms in problem answers alone.
Gemini surfaced no provider firms at all. The companies it did mention were software platforms and product vendors, which we do not count as service providers.
On provider choice questions, Perplexity and AI Overviews named no firms in the text. Where firms appeared there, it was through source links to provider websites.
Finding 3
A clear homepage was common among cited firms
What the cited firms' homepages had in common, and what they did not prove.
In September 2026 we looked at the public homepages of 12 firms that appeared in the answers. All 12 loaded, and 11 stated plainly what kind of service they sell.
One did not, and it was still cited. That matters: a clear homepage is good practice for any buyer, but this sample cannot show that it is what gets a firm into an AI answer. It shows what cited firms look like, not why they were cited.
What this covers
How far these results go
A snapshot, read for what it is.
- This is a snapshot of 80 answers from September 2026 in one market: managed IT and cybersecurity. AI answers change over time and differ by account and setting.
- We traced the firms that appeared. We did not test a list of firms that did not appear, so this study cannot say why any particular business is missing from AI answers, and one answer is never proof that a firm is invisible everywhere.
- Counts describe these answers only. They are not rankings, traffic or market share.
- Nothing here shows that a website change will get a firm into AI answers.
Key terms and facts
The short version
- Cited
- The answer shows a link to the firm's own website as a source.
- Named
- The firm's name appears in the text of the answer.
- Recommended
- The answer tells the reader to choose or contact that specific firm.
- Provider firm
- A company that sells IT or security services. Software platforms, publishers and public agencies are not counted.

Takeaways
What to do with this
Know which kind of appearance you mean
Cited, named and recommended are different outcomes. In this capture, firms were cited far more often than named, and never recommended.
Ask the questions your buyers ask
Run your own category questions in more than one AI product. The same question can surface firms through links in one product and not at all in another.
Keep the basics for people first
Say plainly what you sell and who you serve. It helps buyers either way; its effect on AI answers is not proven here.
Questions and answers
Common questions
Do AI search products recommend IT or security firms?
Not in this capture. Across 80 answers, 120 provider firms appeared, but no answer recommended a specific firm.
How do service firms usually appear in AI search answers?
Mostly as cited sources. Firms appeared as a source link in 130 firm and answer pairs (103 different firms) and were named in the answer text in 48 pairs (46 different firms).
Which AI search product surfaced the most firms?
Perplexity and Google AI Overviews surfaced the most firms, mostly through source links. Gemini surfaced no provider firms at all.
Why is my business not showing up in AI search?
This study cannot answer that for any one business. It traced the firms that did appear in 80 answers; it did not test firms that were missing, and one answer is never proof a firm is absent everywhere.
Does a clearer website get you into AI answers?
That is not shown here. Of 12 cited firms whose homepages we checked, 11 stated their service clearly and 1 did not, and that one was still cited.
